Configuration information should be easier to trust.

Signal departments often have critical equipment information spread across spreadsheets, drawings, local files, maintenance records, and individual knowledge. Signal Configuration Management brings the core configuration picture together in one controlled workspace.

Signal Configuration Management is being expanded to support site-specific software mapping, version history, change records, and verification workflows. This portion of the product is not yet complete and is presented here as the planned direction of the platform.

FRA's Software Management Control Plan rule centers on documenting the proper and intended software version for each specific site and location, maintaining that mapping through the system life cycle, and identifying and confirming the proper software configuration after replacement, modification, or disarrangement.

Processor-based crossing systems

Where applicable, certain processor-based highway-rail grade crossing systems that provide safety-critical data to a signal or train-control system are included in the § 236.18 software-management requirements.

For applicable Subpart H products, FRA requires configuration-management requirements and configuration/revision controls intended to protect safety functions and support auditability of changes.

Passenger railroad configuration management

Passenger rail operations must establish a configuration-management program that identifies change authority, establishes change processes, and provides for formal notification and approval by affected departments.

Compliance note. Signal Configuration Management is intended to support railroad-controlled configuration-management processes and records. The software does not by itself establish or certify compliance, replace a railroad's approved plans or procedures, or substitute for required testing, verification, approvals, or regulatory determinations.
